Book Smart vs Life Smart

I find it frustrating that some employers won't hire you if you don't have a college degree. Fooey!
Some of the smartest people we know make some of the dumbest decisions. Book smart doesn't always equal life smart ~ just look at Wall street and Washington DC for example. Most of those people are highly educated from top institutions with law degrees and probably can't even button their own shirts yet we entrust them to run our financial institutions and our government. Seriously?

Then we have the college dropouts ~ Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Frank Lloyd Wright, James Cameron, and Mark Zuckerberg just to name a few. Would you pass them over for employment if you knew they didn't have a college degree? If so, you're the idiot!  Come on employers, give the people a chance! Give them a chance to prove their worth to your company.

In my opinion, having years of experience, being passionate about your craft, having a good work ethic, along with a history of good employment, great reviews, and being honest and ethical should account for something.

  1. I do agree. Sometimes, you can find an employer who values experience over former education, but others are forced by company hiring policies to focus on degrees. This is especially true with government/contracting jobs, where the requirement for a degree is written within the hiring guidelines (regardless of years of education). The practices of the old need to be re-evaluated for the 21st century.
